What’s Different About Teaching Reading to Students Learning English?provides teacher trainers with a research-based curriculum to guide the professional development of classroom and ESL teachers who teach reading in classes where some or all of the students are English language learners.

The complete What’s Different package contains the Trainer’s Manual, Study Guide, Why Reading is Hard DVD, and a CD-ROM of the presentation materials.

The Trainer’s Manual contains everything needed to conduct a workshop or series of workshops for teachers of English language learners in elementary and middle schools. The manual features workshop-ready materials; sample lesson plans; teachers’ reflections on instructional practices; summaries of reading research from the National Literacy Panel report; a chapter on content area reading and study skills for middle school students; information on beginning reading and first language influences.

The Study Guide contains activity materials and readings for participants’ use during the workshop. It also serves as a handy reference following the workshop experience. A study guide is required for each workshop participant. These can be ordered separately at the CAL Store.

The DVD, Why Reading Is Hard, provides examples of what makes learning to read in English hard and leads viewers to examine the reading skills that they know and use automatically.

The CD-ROM provides presentation materials in three convenience formats: PowerPoint, PDF, and transparency masters.

The workshop format is flexible and may follow a number of different schedules, depending on school and district needs.
